Saltspring Island is a wonderful place to learn sea kayaking. This small island is alive with artists, fine food, wineries, a quaint harbour and colourful local people. Two days of instruction will prepare you to begin sea kayaking on your own or to join guided multi-day excursions with confidence. Program can be tailored to your age and abilities, and families are welcome.

Learning to Sea Kayak Is Easy

Sea kayaking might sound difficult and possibly physically challenging, but it’s not. With the right instruction, anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and mobility can learn this beautiful and gentle form of self propelled travel. These programs are specifically designed for beginners or people wanting to refresh skills they’ve let lapse. They take place in both fresh and salt water so that learners get comfortable with waves. Instructors are all certified.

Day 1: Arrive Salt Spring Island.

The island is very accessible on BC Ferries with direct ferries from Tssawassen on the mainland, from Swartz Bay (Victoria) and from Crofton on Vancouver Island. You may actually walk on or cycle on to the ferries as well since there is no real need for a car on this tour. We will meet you at whichever ferry port you arrive at on Salt Spring, or give you directions if you are driving or cycling. You will check into you hotel and have the balance of the day free. Tonight enjoy an included meal at the hotel. (D)

Day 2: Instruction and Paddle

Today you’ll meet your instructor and spend the morning learning strokes, safety techniques and practice paddling. Beginners will not be learning the eskimo roll, however if you are more advanced, we can change this to an advanced instruction clinic. This session usually takes place on one of the lakes on the island. Balance of the day is free. You can explore town on foot, or if you’re keen, take an afternoon paddle around the harbor area as you are now legally able to rent a kayak.(Rental not included)(B)

Day 3: Galleries, Artisans, Wineries, Sailing or Yoga: You Choose

Today is a day to explore. The island is chock full of art studios, garden farms and even a couple of wineries. To get around, you’ll be provided with a full day rental of an electric assist powered BionX bicycle, map and a printed guide to check out the island’s many quaint attractions. Not a cyclist? Its easy to hop on to the islands public buses that will make stops and pick ups on the road by indicating to the dirver. You can even stow bikes on the bus bike rack. Prefer to sail? You can choose a half day sailing cruise in the afternoon. None of the above? You can also choose a private Yoga lesson. (B)

Day 4: Marine Park Paddle and Gourmet Picnic

By today you will be ready to tackle something a little more ambitious. The Marine Park Tour allows you to get away from it all and explore the natural wonders of the Gulf Islands. We will launch our kayaks from a quiet spot on Salt Spring that will allow us easier access to the parks and protection from the winds.Tours include an interpretive walk at our destination, adding immensely to the overall tour experience. Wildlife sightings are common on our Marine Park Tours – look out for eagles and their nests, river otters, harbour seals, sea lions, great blue herons, mink, porpoise, and a whole host of underwater life. After returning to Ganges, and time to freshen up, we will provide a voucher for dinner at a local restaurant. (BLD)

Day 5: Breakfast and Head Home

Today after breakfast you may want to continue your stay, or do some more visiting. There are several options for leaving the island depending on your onward plans. (B)

The package includes: 4 nights cozy inn accommodation in std room, non-view; breakfasts daily; sea kayak instruction covering wet exit, self rescue and paddle techniques, all gear; choice of a a full day bicycle rental, a guided sailing tour, or private yoga lesson; 5 hour (approximately) guided marine park wildlife paddle with gourmet lunch, 2 dinners at hotel restaurant, complimentary transfers from island ferry terminal.
